Outdoor Winter Fun at the Crystal Lake Park District

family photo aligned left with a borderThe Crystal Lake Park District offers sledding, cross-country skiing, and ice skating at several different parks and facilities in the winter as weather and conditions permit.

Conditions and Closings

All winter activity areas are monitored on a daily basis to determine usability and safety. Updated reports on conditions and closings are listed below or are available by calling our RainoutLine at (815) 410-4475, ext. 9 for sled hill/ice rink updates. Acceptable Conditions for Skating

Park District staff inspects ice rinks daily to determine if they are safe for skating. At each skating rink, ice thickness is averaged from measurements taken at six locations. The following guidelines are used to determine if ice rinks can be open for skating.

Average 5-6 inches of ice: Open skating to the public. Trucks or tractors are not allowed on ice for clearing off snow, so skating areas are not optimal for skating.

Average 7-8 inches of ice: Open skating to the public. Broom tractor/snow blower only can be used for clearing snow.

Average 9-10 inches of ice: Open skating to the public. Truck and tractor can be used for clearing rinks.
