The Nature Center was built in 1968. Minor remodeling has been done over the years to the restrooms. The park district has started a complete renovation project that will provide handicap accessibility and restore the exterior doors to the restrooms. As part of the renovation project, a new work room and display wall will be constructed. This project is expected to finish up in mid-September and will be a wonderful enhancement to the unique Nature Center.

Main Beach Renovations

Main Beach September 21, 2016 Update

It’s full force construction at Main Beach these days! The Crystal Lake Park District is renovating the oldest and original part of the building, the Pavilion, which was constructed in 1926. Perhaps you have noticed that the windows and doors were removed and boarded up recently. New windows and doors will be installed in several months. Meanwhile, work on the roof includes the installation of new heating and air conditioning units, along with associated vents and supports. Inside the Pavilion, new concrete footings and steel beams have been installed to support the new ceiling. The park and restrooms remain open during construction. When completed in several months, the Pavilion will be totally renovated, upgraded and ready for the next 90 years!

Main Beach August 25, 2016 Update

We received the wonderful news that the State of Illinois has reinstated our grant, so the project will finally move forward. The tentative schedule is to start construction of a new playground and new boat rental facility in September of 2017. Watch here for more updates throughout the next year.

Main Beach Pavilion Renovation

Beginning in early September, you will see a lot of construction activity in and around the Main Beach recreation building. The Pavilion Room is getting a much needed face lift, including new windows and doors, insulation, air conditioning, new floor and ceiling, new lights, etc. During construction, the building is closed to the public (except for the restrooms) but the park itself remains open. Programs normally held at Main Beach have been relocated for the Fall Session. Watch here for updates throughout the project!

Main Beach January 7, 2015 Update-Phase 1

The Crystal Lake Park District recently received the good news that a proposal for a $400,000 grant toward renovating Main Beach was approved. This announcement begins a two -year design and construction schedule that will conclude with a Grand Opening in the Spring of 2017. The major components of Phase I include replacing the existing boat rental facility and the playground. Other amenities will include an expanded south beach, a sand/water play area for tots, two shade sail structures, new walkways, baggo courts and landscaping.

The boat rental shed was built in the 1960’s and expanded in the 1980’s. The new building will be moved to the south and will be architecturally designed with a boat house theme. Piers and boat storage areas will be upgraded and will be handicap accessible. The playground was built by volunteers in 1994 and has reached the end of its life expectancy. The new playground will be designed with input from residents and park users. It will meet all safety codes and handicap accessibility regulations.

Main Beach has been the center of year round recreation for residents of the Crystal Lake Park District for over 90 years. Our goal is to complete a total renovation of the park by 2021, the 100th celebration of the formation of the Crystal Lake Park District.

Main Beach November 14, 2014 Update

A major renovation of Main Beach is scheduled to begin in 2016 that will be completed in phases over a several year period. We are in the early planning stages for the project which will include:

Interior renovations of the pavilion (gym) including new flooring, windows and air conditioning

Construction of a deck on the lake side of the building

Playground replacement

Boat rental facility and marina replacement

Enlarged beach with children’s sand and water play area

Grant applications have been submitted for these projects and notification of awards is pending. If the grant funding is received, it will be full speed ahead!
