2025 LIFEGUARD TRAINING

The Crystal Lake Park District takes pride in training and hiring confident, responsible young adults to patrol our beaches and keep our swimmers safe at all times. We offer lifeguard training classes several times per year. This class provides full certification upon course completion.

This class provides entry-level lifeguard candidates with the skills and knowledge necessary to prevent, recognize and respond to emergencies, and to provide care for injuries and sudden illness until advanced medical personnel arrive. This class is taught in a blended learning format with an online portion that must be completed prior to attending the first class.

Prerequisites:

  • Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence.
  • Jump into the water, submerge, resurface, swim 150 yards (using the front crawl breaststroke or a combination of both), maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs, then swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breastroke or a combination of both.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds by starting in the water, swimming 20 yards, surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 12 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back, return to the starting point holding the object at the surface with both hands and exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
  • ALL classes must be attended for the entire length of time.
  • Students who pass the course will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding with Waterfront Skills, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid. These certifications are valid for two years.

Lifeguards who are hired by the Crystal Lake Park District will receive a partial refund of class fees after successfully completing a summer of work.

FEE: $250

LOCATION: MAIN BEACH, 300 LAKESHORE DR, CRYSTAL LAKE

FIRST SPLASH (18 MONTHS TO 3 YRS WITH PARENT)

Infants and toddlers learn to feel comfortable in the water and have fun through games and drills. One parent must be in the water with the swimmer for the entire lesson.

LEVEL 1-tadpoles

Level 1 will help swimmers feel comfortable in the water and enjoy the water safely. Swimmers will fully submerge their faces, blow bubbles, float on front and back with support, kick on front and back with support, alternating arm strokes, and safety skills.

LEVEL 2-minnows

Level 2 will provide swimmers success with fundamental skills. Swimmers will learn to hold their breath and retrieve objects underwater, float on front and back without support, leveling off and turning over, rhythmic breathing, flutter kick, finning, back and front crawl arm stroke, combined strokes, and self-help safety skills.

LEVEL 3-goldfish

Level 3 will build on skills learned in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice. Swimmers will become more comfortable in water slightly deeper than their height, front and back glides, coordinated stroke on front with breathing, coordinated stroke on back, elementary backstroke kick, changing directions, treading water, and cold-water safety skills.

LEVEL 4-starfish

Level 4 develops confidence in the strokes learned and is intended to increase the swimmer's endurance by swimming these strokes for longer distances than in Level 3. In Level 4, swimmers will refine elementary backstroke, front and back crawl, and sculling, and be introduced to the breaststroke and sidestroke. Swimmers will also tread water for an extended period of time.

LEVEL 5-stingrays

Level 5 is coordinating and refining key strokes. Students will swim familiar strokes for greater distance than in previous levels, develop the coordinated breaststroke and sidestroke, and are introduced to the butterfly stroke and surface diving.

LEVEL 6-dolphins

Level 6 students will polish all strokes so they can swim with more ease, efficiency, power, and smoothness over greater distances. Swimmers will develop considerable endurance by the end of class. Surface dives will venture to deeper water.

LEVEL 7-sharks

Level 7 is to perfect all strokes and develop good fitness habits. This level includes many different skills and options, such as swimming for recreation, conditioning, and competitively.
